Map of the Slave River

Important Safety Disclaimer: Slave River Rapids Map

The Fort Smith Paddling Club (FSPC) provides this map and associated rapid descriptions for informational and recreational reference only. By using this resource, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

1. Use at Your Own Risk

The Slave River is a powerful, high-volume river system. Conditions can change rapidly due to water levels, weather, and debris. Paddling on the Slave River involves inherent risks, including property damage, serious injury, or death. The size and remoteness of the river make river rescues and medical evacuations uniquely challenging. You are solely responsible for your own safety.

2. Accuracy of Information

While we strive to keep this map up to date, the FSPC does not guarantee the accuracy or timeliness of the information provided.

  • Water Levels: Rapids change character significantly at different flow rates. Flow rates on the Slave River can fluctuate in a range of 100’s to 1000’s of cubic meters per second in a matter of hours/days. An “easy” line at one level may become a life-threatening hazard at another.
  • Shifting Hazards: Log jams, rock shifts, and new obstructions can occur at any time. Always scout from shore before attempting a rapid, regardless of what is indicated on this map.
  • Underestimated Difficulty: Routes and features have been mapped by advanced whitewater kayakers, and therefore, rapid difficulty may be grossly underestimated for novice paddlers and different types of watercraft.

3. Requirement of Skill and Equipment

This map is not a substitute for professional instruction or experience. Users must:

  • Possess the technical skills required for the specific class of water they are entering.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear, including a Coast Guard-approved PFD and a helmet.
  • Have an emergency action plan in place before heading out on the river. Prepare for the unexpected.
  • Never paddle alone.

4. Limitation of Liability

The Fort Smith Paddling Club, its board members, volunteers, and contributors are not liable for any accidents, injuries, or losses resulting from the use of this map or the pursuit of paddling activities on the Slave River.

The Golden Rule: If in doubt, scout. If still in doubt, walk. The river will be here tomorrow; make sure you are too.
